About Sam Northern

Sam Northern is a teacher-librarian at Simpson Elementary School in Franklin, Kentucky. He graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2008 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Management. Sam has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Morehead State University and a Master of Science in Library Media Education from WKU. Sam has been in education for a total of eight years. Sam’s first international experience occurred in 2008 when he spent two weeks learning the business practices of select companies in India. In 2014, Sam was selected for the Fulbright-Hays Summer Seminars Abroad Program. He spent four weeks in some of China’s most culturally significant cities: Beijing, Xi’an, Chongqing, and Shanghai. A three-time winner of the Kentucky Education Association’s Diversity Lesson Plan Contest, Sam draws on his experiences to encourage students to celebrate the splendid dimensions of our world. About the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship

For ten years National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions have been partnering to offer a select few educators the professional development opportunity of a lifetime. This year 35 U.S. and Canadian fellows were chosen from 720 applicants to be part of the 2016 Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship. Check out the 2016 Class of Grosvenor Teacher Fellows.

About the Expedition

On December 17, 2016 Sam embarked on an educational Lindblad Expedition to Antarctica aboard the National Geographic Explorer. The 14-day excursion included opportunities to encounter penguins and marine mammals, kayak among icebergs, hike legendary landscapes, and learn from Lindblad naturalists and National Geographic photographers.
